Starting in 2019, Somat and Pril support UNICEF’s global nutrition programme to help reduce the number of children suffering from malnutrition globally.
In many parts of the world, many children and adolescents do not receive the diets they need to survive, grow, and develop to their full potential.
With support through the partnership, UNICEF will work to improve the quality of foods children consume.
If locally available foods cannot meet dietary needs, then the use of fortified foods and supplements will be promoted. Children already affected by severe forms of acute malnutrition will receive recommended specialized therapeutic foods. UNICEF’s support will comprise both work with national government to enact adequate national policies and enabling communities to support optimal child diets.
The funding from the partnership between Henkel and UNICEF will be used within the regions and countries where it is most needed, particularly those with the highest burden of malnutrition: East Asia and the Pacific, Eastern and Southern Africa, South Asia, and West and Central Africa.
Every day, UNICEF is helping children from the start, educating mothers about nutrition, fortifying foods with vital nutrients, and saving the lives of children with severe acute malnutrition. Plus, UNICEF works to protect the nutritional status of children in crisis situations.
These activities are part of UNICEF’s global nutrition programme and will be supported through Pril and Somat:
- Treatment and care for children with severe acute malnutrition
- Vitamin A supplementation
- Fortification of foods with vitamins and minerals
- Support to mothers and children in humanitarian emergencies
- Education for mothers and caregivers in health facilities and communities
- Protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding and complementary feeding
By improving diets and feeding practices as well as access to vital nutrition services, combined with access to health care and healthy environments, we have the power to stop malnutrition before it starts and secure a brighter future for children and their families.
What contributions to the UNICEF global nutrition programme meant for Evan’s life
Tired, but happy: Evans Mumo, 2 years and 7 months old, rests after a nutritionally-balanced meal his mother prepared.
Evans lives in Kitui, Kenya. His family benefited from a UNICEF-supported nutrition programme.
Their family’s situation wasn’t always easy. Kenya is still facing great challenges. Almost half of the population lives below the poverty line. Ongoing droughts with the danger of poor harvests are frequent in East Africa, and children and their families are threatened by hunger and malnutrition.
The programme aims to improve the nutritional status of children during their first 1,000 days of life, beginning in utero until 2 years old. It consists of providing nutritional counselling through community health volunteers and an additional cash top-up to households.

Thanks to this nutrition programme, Evans is now a healthy child who gets all the nutrients he needs from his daily nutritious diet. „Evans rarely gets sick nowadays“, says his caretaker, Anastasia Kalekye Mumo, 38. „The only time I take him to the clinic is for growth monitoring and normal things like the flu.“

„Before the nutritional counselling, I didn’t know how to prepare proper foods, only light thin porridge. The community health volunteer taught me how to prepare foods properly and to include different types of foods in my children’s meals.“
